eBay: ‘Ultra rare’ £2 coin with huge error listed for £750 on auction site

Coin collectors tend to be on the look out for the special edition coins worth hundreds of pounds due to their scarcity, such as the Beatrix Potter commemorative coins  or the Kew Gardens 50p. But some collectors might be searching for coins with errors, as some are more noticeable than others. One new listing on eBay shows a £2 coin with a very unique printing error – but the error is so extensive it may deter some collectors. This particular £2 coin, which is listed for a whopping £750, has been issued completely blank, with no designs at all on either side

Listed by eBay user ’rickypuremagic’, who has 100 per cent positive feedback, the seller has shared a number of images of the coin with a completely blank surface.

In the description, the seller explains the coin was meant to be a BU coin, meaning ‘brilliant uncirculated’.

They said: “Here I have for sale an ultra rare, Royal Mint Error Two Pound Coin. I have had this in my collection since 2009.

“Nothing else like this online, so get yourself a one off special piece for your collection.”

They also explained why the coin is blank, adding: “This blank was intended to be a BU coin. As circulated blank centre and outer pills are struck together when the design impressions are struck.”

The seller then added details of its delivery for whoever wins the bidding, saying: “This will be sent special, recorded guaranteed delivery as it has high value. This will come with a certificate of posting. So would be with you by 13:00 the next day.

“Will be properly packaged in a capsule and box. Any questions please ask. Happy bidding.”

Coins can be left blank in the printing process when there is insufficient pressure from the dies to leave a full impression.

The issue most usually occurs when the power to the presses is turned off and the dies continue to strike the coins with less and less pressure until coming to a stop, according to Jim’s Coins.

While this new listing of a blank coin is likely to intrigue many eBay buyers and coin collectors, recently it’s been the Beatrix Potter commemorative coins proving a huge hit.

That includes eBay user “edwin6429”, who has listed a 50p coin for sale. However, they don’t look too keen to wave goodbye to this coin for anything less than a huge amount of money.

In fact, the eBay user is looking for as much as £190 in exchange for the 50 pence piece.

The seller has insisted the 2017 coin is “very rare”, so could this be why it’s got such a hefty price tag?

When buying coins online, it’s recommended that interested parties do their research, and even seek advice from the experts.

This particular Benjamin Bunny 50p was issued by the Royal Mint in 2017.
