Kate Middleton was 'put in very difficult position' by the Queen before William proposed

Unlike Meghan and Harry who fell in love and married in under two years, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s romance has spanned over the course of almost two decades. The two met for the first time while they were students in residence at St Salvator’s Hall at the University of St Andrews in Fife in 2001. Their relationship is said to have blossomed the following year, when the couple moved into a student house.

Despite now having what many would describe a perfect marriage, their journey has not always been so smooth or easy – especially for Kate.

After the couple left university, the now Duchess of Cambridge immediately had to learn how to handle the spotlight, without official support or guidance.

Hounded by photographers on a daily basis, the pressure of dating a member of the Royal Family was also very high.

The Queen was said to be delighted about her grandson’s relationship; however, according to royal expert Katie Nicholl she also had grave concerns.

Her Majesty reportedly believed that Kate needed to have a full-time job in her own right before an engagement was announced.

According to a Vanity Fair report by author and investigative journalist Vicky Ward though, the monarch had put Prince William’s girlfriend in a “very difficult position”.

Ms Ward wrote: “In fact, she [Kate] was quietly working, as her lawyer Gerrard Tyrrell confirms.

“She has been getting up each morning in Bucklebury, driving to the Party Pieces office in Reading, and, according to Hello! magazine, putting together the catalogues for her parents’ company.

“Adam Helliker says he heard she was taking a technology course to learn how to make digital catalogues, which Tyrrell confirms is correct.

Under the circumstances, it was probably about the only job Middleton felt safe doing – and she saw no need to tell the British media about it.

“’She’s been offered every job under the sun,’ a Middleton family friend tells me.

“‘ “Russian oligarchs, fashion designers – everyone wants her. But if she goes out and works, she’ll be accused of abusing her connections – or of being used.… What can she do?’

“‘She’s in a very difficult position.'”

In 2006, Kate also got a part-time job as a fashion-accessories buyer for Jigsaw, a chain-store company owned by John and Belle Robinson.

Ms Robinson gave an interview about Kate, and painted her as a down-to-heart person.

She told the Evening Standard: “She sat in the kitchen at lunchtime and chatted with everyone from the van drivers to the accounts girls.

“She wasn’t precious. A lot of people have distorted it to say we’re friends with her parents, but I’ve only met them four times.

“I have to say I was so impressed by her. There were days when there were TV crews at the end of the drive.

“We’d say, ‘Listen, do you want to go out the back way?’ And she’d say, ‘To be honest, they’re going to hound us until they’ve got the picture. So why don’t I just go, get the picture done, and then they’ll leave us alone.’ ”

In 2007, the couple went through a break-up, but after only three months apart the couple was back together.

The two dated for three more years before getting engaged and married in a fairytale ceremony at at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.
