Meghan Markle & Prince Harry show 'tension' at Trooping the Colour reveals body language

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry arrived at Trooping the Colour together today as did Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton. Kate went on to join Harry, Meghan and Camilla Parker Bowles in a horse-drawn carriage as they took part in the ceremonial procession. The group were later seen reunited with their spouses and children on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the RAF fly-past. There were plenty of smiles from the Royal Family at the event yet a body language expert identified “undeniable signs of tension” and a shift in Harry’s mood.

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge  – who was wearing a pastel yellow coat dress by Alexander McQueen – and Meghan – sporting a navy blue ensemble by her wedding dress designer, Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller – have previously been rumoured to be in a rift – but this seemed to be a thing of the past.

“There were also some emphatic signals to suggest Kate and Meghan do want to be seen as friendly sisters-in-law,” body language expert Judi James told, adding: “Meghan looked happy and when she chatted to Kate using eye contact.”

However, Prince Harry did not seem to share the Duchesses’ good mood. “Harry was wearing the blank but slightly wary expression he’s been seen doing a lot of recently,” said James.

Harry – who is now a father of one – appeared to have left his days as the family’s joker behind him.

James said: “Harry’s default facial expression always used to be a rather naughty-looking grin and it seemed to take an effort to compose it into a more serious look for state occasions.

“These days though, the responsibilities of fatherhood and all the rumoured rifts with his brother do seem to have left him with what looks like almost the opposite problem.”

Whereas Meghan’s smile is genuine, Harry’s appeared forced, as they sat in the carriage together, explained James.

“Meghan’s symmetric mouth shape and the rounding of her cheeks and narrowing of the eyes suggested a genuinely delighted smile as she greeted the crowds again for the first time since Archie’s birth,” she said.

“Harry seemed to be attempting to mirror her delight but his smile was much less convincing here. His teeth were clenched, suggesting some tension, and his lower jaw was slightly jutted, which can hint of resolution or determination.”

Prince Harry seemed to show a similar mood when he appeared with his entire family (apart from his new baby) on the Palace balcony.

Meghan played a more active role in the public appearance while Harry stood tucked away behind her.

“Meghan smiled widely and reacted to everything happily while he wore anxious-looking puckered brows behind her,” observed James.

In comparison, the Cambridge family “formed a sparkling family unit” as Kate and William stood with Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 4 and Prince Louis, 1.

“Little Louis confidently and actively responded to everything that happened,” said James. “Waving his arm at anything and everything.

“Charlotte had perfected the royal wave and the open-mouthed laughter from William and Kate, with Kate arching her back slightly, shows they are genuinely amused by and proud of their three children.”

However, the Cambridges and Sussex did position themselves on either side of the Queen rather than all together.

“This year there were no rapport signals between the Sussex’s and the Cambridges as they decided to stand down either end of the balcony,” said James.

“Previously they stood with Harry and Meghan close but slightly behind William and Kate but this year it was William and Kate and their children to the Queen’s right while Harry stood behind Meghan to the Queen’s left.”
