Meghan Markle the next Sarah Ferguson? The two royals share this in common

Following her marriage to Prince Harry last year, became a member of the On the official royal website, her bio reads: “As well as undertaking royal duties in support of The Queen, both in the UK and overseas, The Duchess devotes her time to supporting a number of charities and organisations.” Since joining “The Firm”, Meghan has hit headlines for appearing to break royal protocol with her fashion choices, and public manner such as posing for selfies with fans. The Duchess’ behaviour has drawn comparisons to former royal Although the Duchess of York is no longer an official member of the British Monarch, following her divorce from Prince Andrew in 1996, she still remains close to the family and her ex. She’s often spotted making royal engagements, and she supports various charities particularly for children.

When she married Andrew in 1986 she was known for breaking convention, just like Meghan is today.

So could the Duchess of Sussex, 38, be the new Sarah Ferguson? Here’s some of the things they have in common.

They’re writers

This month, Meghan made her editorial debut with Vogue’s September issue.

The Duchess of Sussex is believed to be planning to pen a children’s book based on the two dogs, Bogart and Guy, she adopted from a shelter while still living in the United States. Meghan would be following in the footsteps of fellow royal bride Sarah Ferguson, who also authored a series of popular children’s books.

Speaking to Nine News Australia, royal commentator Juliet Rieden said: “No princesses and castles, who knows. If it’s actually based on the dogs that are her dogs. But this is not the first time a member of the Royal Family has written a children’s book.

“Sarah, Duchess of York, she wrote a very successful line of children’s books.”

Doing it their way

Both Sarah and Meghan have paved their own way and not stuck to convention.

Meghan and Harry’s wedding last year was very different to many other royal weddings.

The Duchess sought an American pastor and a gospel choir to represent her roots.

Similarly, Sarah Ferguson was the first royal bride to have a bachelorette party ahead of her and Andrew’s wedding in 1986.

The Duchess of York and Prince Andrew also helped re-write the royal protocol on public speaking during their royal tour of Canada in 1987.

Oprah Winfrey told Entertainment Weekly how amazing it was that Meghan was making her own choices and changing the status quo.

Miss Winfrey, 65, said: “Oh my God! I’m so proud of her decisions.

“To be able to stand up and say ‘this is what I really want for my baby and my family and now I’m going to do it a different way when it’s been done that way for a thousand years?’”

Public displays of affection

Meghan and Harry haven’t shied away from PDAs – something many royals tend to keep under wraps.

They’re often pictured holding hands when out and about.

Like the young royals, Sarah Ferguson and former husband Prince Andrew were known for their spontaneous loved-up, displays and their relaxed attitudes while on official outings.
