Warning British Jews could flee UK if Jeremy Corbyn becomes Prime Minister

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, Mr Cleverly also said big businesses and entrepreneurs could leave Britain. The intervention comes in the midst of an investigation from the Equality and Human Rights Commission into alleged antisemitism in the Labour Party and Mr Corbyn tweeting there would be “no billionaires” in a fair society. Mr Cleverly said: “We’re not just talking about big businesses, some of those people are entrepreneurs and business people, the kind of people that fill the coffers of the chancellor, and employ tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people in the UK.

“But, frankly, a number of them are Jewish friends who have just said that if he got anywhere near the levers of power, they’d be out of here.

“I never thought in my lifetime that I would hear that said.”

The Braintree MP added: “And this isn’t just a throwaway comment – these are people who said they have actually looked at going to family in other parts of the world.

“That is a really horrible thing to hear.

“And part of my job is to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Mr Cleverly is in charge of running the Tory campaign.

Last week senior rabbi Jonathan Romain urged congregants to vote for candidates with the best chance of defeating Labour MPs.

Mr Romain warned that a “Corbyn-led government would pose a danger to Jewish life as we know it, whether it be utterances that cause Jews to feel victimised, less secure and no longer at ease or maybe even legislation that restricts Jewish life or relations with Israel in some way, then you may wish to vote to ensure Labour does not gain your local seat”.

Labour has insisted it is “implacably opposed to antisemitism in any form”.

After Ms Ellman quit the party, a Labour spokesman said: “Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party are fully committed to the support, defence and celebration of the Jewish community and continue to take robust action to root out antisemitism in the party and wider society.”

Ms Ellman said to The Times: “I believe that Jeremy Corbyn would be a danger to the country, a danger to the Jewish community as well, but a danger to the country too.”

Mr Cleverly said: “There shouldn’t be that kind of fear from any community in the UK about a future government.”

The former Brexit Under-Secretary was first elected to Parliament in 2015.

He spent eight years on the London Assembly as member for Bexley and Bromley.
