Worthing Pier on lockdown after chemical spill – police issue urgent safety warning


SUSSEX police are responding to a “hazardous” material incident in Worthing after seaside visitors began complaining of “burning” eyes. 

Worthing Pier was evacuated and sealed off as officials dealt with the incident in 33mph at around midday on Sunday. 

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Emergency services are responding to a hazardous material incident in Worthing.

“A small number of people have reported symptoms including sore eyes and vomiting.

“The investigation is ongoing and we will release more information as soon as we are able to.”

The cordon is in place along Marine Parade between Grand Avenue and Windsor Road.

A staff member at Coast Cafe told PA people were calm and that “a couple of people were complaining of itchy eyes”.

She added: “They’ve cleared the seafront and we’ve got the windows closed and are locked in.”

One woman told how her friend complained of sore eyes while they were sat on the beach.  

She wrote on Facebook: “My friend complained of burning eyes this morning just after 11am while we were sitting on the beach.”

A man sent a tweet to police asking: “Hello, we’ve just been evacuated from Worthing Pier due to suspected chemical incident.

“How dangerous is this and what symptoms should we be aware of?”

Sussex Police tweeted just before 12.40pm: “Emergency services are responding to a hazardous material incident in Worthing.

“A small number of people have reported symptoms including sore eyes and vomiting.

“The investigation is ongoing and we will release more information as soon as we are able to.”
